Beginner Pole Mistakes Everyone Makes (And Why They’re Totally Normal)

If you’ve ever walked out of a pole class thinking, “Why does this feel so awkward?” — you’re not alone. Every single beginner goes through the same learning curve, and the mistakes you’re making are not only normal… they’re expected.
Let’s break down the most common beginner pole mistakes and why they’re actually signs of progress.
1. Gripping the Pole Too Hard
This is the #1 beginner habit. When you’re unsure, your body’s instinct is to hold on for dear life. But gripping too tightly:
tires your hands
limits your movement
makes spins harder
Over time, you’ll learn to relax your grip and use technique instead of tension. It’s a natural evolution.
2. Spinning Too Fast
Momentum is exciting — and a little scary. Beginners often:
push too hard
lean too far
forget to control the entry
The good news? Speed is easy to fix. With practice, you’ll learn how to control your spin with your core, not your arms.
3. Forgetting to Breathe
When you’re concentrating, your brain goes into “focus mode,” and breathing becomes optional. But holding your breath:
makes moves harder
increases tension
reduces stamina
Your instructor will remind you to breathe until it becomes second nature.
4. Overthinking Every Step
Pole is a new language. Your brain is processing:
hand placement
foot placement
timing
grip
posture
rotation
It’s a lot. Overthinking is normal at first. With repetition, your body starts to remember the movements automatically.
5. Feeling Awkward in Transitions
Transitions are the glue between moves — and they’re often the hardest part for beginners. You might feel:
clunky
unsure
stiff
uncoordinated
This is completely normal. Flow comes with time, confidence, and muscle memory.
6. Comparing Yourself to Others
Every beginner does this, even if they don’t admit it. But remember:
everyone started somewhere
everyone struggles with something
everyone learns at a different pace
Your journey is uniquely yours.
7. Thinking You’re “Not Good Enough”
This is the biggest mistake of all — and the most untrue. Pole is challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. The fact that you showed up means you’re already succeeding.
These Mistakes Mean You’re Learning
Mistakes aren’t signs of failure — they’re signs of growth. Every advanced dancer you admire has made every single one of these mistakes. They’re part of the process, part of the journey, and part of what makes your progress so meaningful.

I always love to read these. They always give such positive vibes.
