The Beginner Mindset — How to Stay Motivated in Your First 30 Days of Pole or Aerial

Your first month of pole or aerial is a whirlwind. One moment you’re nailing a move you never thought possible, and the next you’re wondering why your left side refuses to cooperate. This is all part of the journey — and the mindset you bring into these first 30 days can shape your entire experience.

Here’s how to stay motivated, grounded, and excited as you begin.

1. Expect Progress to Be Non‑Linear

Some days you’ll feel unstoppable. Other days, even the warm‑up feels like a challenge. This doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong — it means you’re learning a new skill.

Pole and aerial progress looks like:

  • small wins

  • tiny improvements

  • moments of “oh wow, that felt easier today”

Celebrate those. They matter.

2. Stop Comparing Your Day 1 to Someone Else’s Day 300

Studios are full of people at different stages. It’s easy to look around and think, “I’ll never get there.”   But here’s the truth: every advanced student you see once struggled with the exact same beginner moves you’re learning now.

Your journey is yours — and it’s unfolding exactly as it should.

3. Track Your Wins (Even the Small Ones)

Progress is easier to see when you record it. Try:

  • taking a photo after each class

  • writing down moves you learned

  • noting what felt easier this week

Looking back after a month will show you just how far you’ve come.

4. Embrace the Awkward Phase

Everyone has one. The spins feel weird. The hoop feels high. Your grip feels unsure.

This phase isn’t a sign you’re not good at this — it’s a sign you’re learning something brand new. Awkwardness is temporary. Confidence is what comes next.

5. Ask Questions and Use Your Instructor

Your instructor is there to help you feel safe, supported, and successful. If something feels confusing, scary, or impossible, speak up. There’s always a modification, a cue, or a trick that can make a move click.

You’re not expected to know anything on your own.

6. Focus on How It Feels, Not How It Looks

Pole and aerial are about:

  • strength

  • expression

  • empowerment

  • discovering what your body can do

Your shapes will refine over time. For now, enjoy the feeling of moving in new ways.

7. Remember Why You Started

Maybe you wanted to feel stronger. Maybe you wanted a new challenge. Maybe you wanted to reconnect with your body. Maybe you just wanted something fun.

Whatever your reason — hold onto it. Let it guide you through the tough days.

Your First 30 Days Are Just the Beginning

You’re building strength, confidence, and a new relationship with your body. You’re learning skills that take time, patience, and practice. And most importantly — you’re showing up.

That alone makes you unstoppable.
